The invisible component nobody orders separately

Anyone interested in electronic displays thinks first of the display itself: size, color, how often the content changes. The question of how dozens or hundreds of such devices actually stay in sync is one hardly anyone asks before buying or renting. At Vitria, that's exactly what a gateway, also called an access point, handles: a device that mediates between the fleet of displays and the central software. Without this bridge, there'd be no way to get new prices, menus, or occupancy displays onto the individual devices. The gateway is deliberately unassuming, usually hanging unnoticed on a wall or ceiling while the displays take center stage. Even so, it's the precondition for a fleet functioning as a fleet at all, rather than as a collection of individual, isolated devices.

Why wireless displays need a bridge

Vitria's displays are bistable e-paper devices that only draw power at the moment content changes and therefore last for months on a single battery charge. That's the real reason a gateway is needed. Picture, for comparison, an installation in which every single display had to be permanently connected via a network cable and a power cable, as with classic screens. For a single device that would be feasible; for hundreds of labels on a shelf or door signs across an entire floor, it would be an unrealistic amount of cabling. Because the displays are battery-powered and communicate wirelessly instead, this problem disappears — but at the same time, a point is needed that bundles this wireless communication and connects it to the software. That point is the gateway.

How many displays an access point serves

A single gateway doesn't just control one or two displays, but hundreds at once. That's what makes the whole architecture economical: instead of needing a separate network connection for every display, a single access point is generally enough for an entire location or a large part of it. Exactly how many displays hang off a gateway depends on the size and floor plan of the location, which is why we deliberately don't state a fixed number here. The order of magnitude is hundreds of devices per gateway. For most businesses, from a single branch to a larger warehouse, this one building block is enough to cover the entire floor space.

How a rollout is planned

Before a fleet of displays goes live, gateway placement is thought through in advance, not corrected afterward. What matters is where the majority of displays are located and how the site is structurally divided, across several rooms, floors, or a larger sales area, say. At especially large or convoluted locations, more than one gateway can make sense so coverage stays reliable for all displays. This planning is handled by Vitria as part of the rollout; the business itself doesn't need to understand the placement or the underlying technology in detail. The result is an installation in which every display is reliably reachable, regardless of how the floor space is laid out in detail.

What the gateway connects to the platform

A gateway is more than just an antenna — it's the interface to the central software through which content is controlled. When a new price, a new menu, or a new occupancy display is set in the Vitria platform, that command first goes to the gateway at the relevant location, and only from there on to the individual displays within its range. Without this intermediate step, every display would have to be individually and directly connected to the software, which technically wouldn't make sense for battery-powered devices. The gateway therefore bundles the data traffic for an entire location's fleet, making it possible in the first place for content to be controlled centrally from one place for all displays at once, regardless of whether that's five or several hundred devices.

Why it's included in the subscription

Gateways and the associated mounting accessories are a fixed part of the monthly subscription, not a separate product a business has to additionally procure or configure. Anyone renting displays from Vitria automatically gets the infrastructure needed for it, with no separate invoice and no in-house IT effort for setup. That sets the model apart from a classic self-installation, in which a business would have to purchase, set up, and maintain network technology itself over years. Even when the fleet is expanded, with additional displays at an existing location, say, the necessary gateway capacity is part of Vitria's ongoing management, not an extra line item on the invoice.

What happens if there's a defect

Like any electronic device, a gateway can eventually fail or need replacement. Because it's part of the Hardware-as-a-Service subscription, it falls under the same coverage as a defective display: replacement is included in the monthly price, and the business itself doesn't have to procure a new device or handle the setup. This is a point that's often underestimated when deciding on a subscription, because a gateway barely draws attention in daily use — until it fails and suddenly affects the entire fleet at a location. For businesses, that means the availability of the entire fleet doesn't depend on the lifespan of a single, mostly unnoticed component that no one in the business would otherwise be responsible for. This responsibility deliberately sits with Vitria, not with the renting business, for the whole duration of the subscription.

A display alone doesn't make a working solution — only the interplay with a gateway turns individual devices into a controllable fleet. Anyone choosing electronic displays doesn't need to worry about this infrastructure themselves; from planning through installation to replacement, it's part of the subscription. Little of this is visible in day-to-day use, and that's the point: the displays show current content without anyone in the business needing to know how that content technically gets there.
