E-Paper Display Outdoors: Planning for Weatherproof Use
Different rules apply outdoors than indoors: temperature, water, and mounting determine whether an e-paper display survives for years. An overview of IP65, the sandwich board, and Vitria's street panel.
Why indoor displays hit their limits outdoors
Vitria's standard e-paper displays are rated, depending on format, for 0 to 40 °C or 0 to 45 °C. That's entirely sufficient for shops, offices, canteens, and covered entrance areas, but not for a location exposed to rain, frost, direct sun, and temperature swings over months and years. The electronics, seals, and housing of an indoor device simply aren't built for this stress profile. One advantage of e-paper technology itself, its good legibility in direct sunlight, holds regardless of location. But that doesn't make an indoor device weatherproof — legibility in sunlight and protection from rain and frost are two different properties. This is exactly why Vitria runs a separate, dedicated outdoor product line, built from the ground up for wind, weather, and temperature extremes. Anyone wanting to mount a display permanently outdoors should therefore not reach for the indoor model and hope it holds up, but deliberately choose a device certified for this use.
What IP65 means in practice
IP65 is a protection rating, not marketing fluff. The first digit, 6, stands for complete protection against dust and foreign objects; the second, 5, for protection against water jets from any direction. An IP65 device therefore withstands rain, splash water, and a hose's spray. What IP65 doesn't mean: permanent submersion or underwater operation — that would only be covered from IP67 or IP68. For a wall- or post-mounted outdoor display, that's not a drawback; a sandwich board on the sidewalk doesn't need to swim, it needs to withstand weather. It's important not to confuse the two digits: a device with a high dust-protection class but a weak water-protection class would be unsuitable for Swiss outdoor weather. Vitria's outdoor displays are consistently IP65-certified and thus built for year-round outdoor operation — not for locations that are regularly flooded.
Temperature range: −15 °C to 65 °C
Alongside water and dust resistance, temperature range is the second critical factor. Vitria's outdoor displays operate reliably between −15 °C and 65 °C. That covers a typical Swiss annual cycle, from cold winter mornings on the Central Plateau or at higher elevations to hot summer days with direct sunlight on dark housing parts, where the actual component temperature can sit considerably above air temperature. Indoor devices, with their 0 to 40 or 0 to 45 °C range, would suffer under both extremes — with failures in winter, and accelerated electronics aging in summer. Anyone wanting to operate a display on a façade, a forecourt, or a post year-round doesn't need this extended range as a nice-to-have, but as a requirement.
The sandwich board: mobile display for the sidewalk
The sandwich board is a 31.2-inch A-frame display that replaces classic sandwich-board signs outside shops and restaurants. It's legible from both sides of the sidewalk, IP65-certified, and works across the full temperature range of −15 °C to 65 °C, so reliably even through Swiss winters. It can run on battery or mains power, whichever is more practical at the location. The image changes in about two seconds, sufficient for daily specials, promotions, or signposting, but not a replacement for moving advertising. For businesses that set it up daily in front of the entrance and bring it back in at night, it's the direct digital alternative to a chalkboard, without the writing smudging or becoming illegible in the rain.
The street panel: permanently mounted for façade, post, and neighborhood
The street panel is designed for fixed installation, up to 42 inches, wall- or post-mounted. It's likewise IP65-certified and can run on mains power or solar, which also makes it usable at locations without a grid connection, at a parking lot or a freestanding post at a town entrance, say. In practice, the street panel is especially suited to neighborhood associations wanting to replace central announcements, cooperatives with several properties needing consistent information at a fixed point, and shopping streets wanting a shared overview of promotions or events. The choice between mains and solar power depends on the location and is decided per project, not prescribed uniformly.
Why there's no fixed price for outdoor use
For most Vitria products, a clear starting price applies, which can be seriously calculated for standardized indoor formats. For outdoor use it's different: price on request, project-based, applies as a rule. The reason isn't uncertainty about the product, but the variability of the conditions of use: a wall-mounted panel on an existing façade with an available power connection needs completely different mounting, cabling, and protection than a freestanding post with a solar panel at a location without grid access. Size, mounting type, power supply, and structural conditions vary so much that a flat price would either be wrong for most projects or would have to be calculated with so much buffer that it would become unfair. That's why every outdoor project is reviewed individually before a binding price is quoted.
Mounting, power supply, and planning: what a business should prepare
Anyone requesting an outdoor project arrives at a solid quote faster if three points are already clarified. First, the location: sidewalk, façade, freestanding post, or forecourt, including rough distance and sightline to passersby. Second, the mounting type: wall mounting on an existing structure, new post mounting, or a mobile sandwich board set up daily. Third, the power situation: is a grid connection available nearby, or is battery power or a solar solution needed. These three pieces of information largely determine mounting effort, cable routing, and weather protection, and therefore the price. A business that has these points roughly worked out before the first conversation saves itself follow-up questions and gets a more solid estimate.
Rent or buy: a choice outdoors too
As with all Vitria displays, the outright purchase option is available alongside the subscription model for outdoor use too. Under the subscription, hardware, software, operation, and replacement in the event of a defect are included in a monthly price, which is especially relevant for outdoor devices facing higher weather exposure. With a purchase, the business bears the acquisition cost and later maintenance itself, but owns the device outright. Which model makes more sense depends on the location, the planned usage period, and whether a business prefers ongoing operating costs or a one-time investment. Both variants are discussed in the same initial conversation in which mounting, power supply, and price are also clarified.
Frequently asked questions
- Can a normal Vitria display also be used outdoors?
- No, not permanently. Standard displays are built for 0 to 40 or 0 to 45 °C and aren't protected against continuous rain or frost. For outdoor use, the dedicated, IP65-certified product line with an operating range of −15 °C to 65 °C is needed.
- What does an outdoor display from Vitria cost?
- There's no fixed price. Size, mounting type, and power supply differ too much from project to project for a flat figure, so every outdoor project is calculated individually and a price is given on request.
- Does an IP65 display withstand a garden hose or heavy rain?
- Yes, IP65 covers water jets from any direction, including rain and splash water. It doesn't mean the device may be submerged, though — that would only be covered from IP67 or IP68.
- Can a street panel be operated without a power connection?
- Yes, the street panel can run on solar power, which also makes it usable at locations without a grid connection. Whether mains or solar power makes more sense is clarified per location in the initial conversation.
