A tablet is cheaper to buy, an e-ink display cheaper to run. Where the math tips — and which technology actually fits which use case.

A permanently operated tablet ages like any consumer electronics device: the battery loses noticeable capacity over repeated charge cycles, the display can show burn-in effects with very long continuous display of static content, and a drop from a table often ends in costly total loss with a glass screen. E-paper modules, by contrast, are generally built more robustly, age noticeably more slowly due to the low refresh frequency and the lack of continuous operation, and need battery changes or complete device replacement far less often.

Menus, price tags, door signs, and notices generally fall clearly into the second category — which is exactly why e-paper is increasingly winning out in these applications, while tablets play to their strengths where actual video or interactivity is genuinely needed.
